ENTER THE TERMINAL

About the book

A philosophical science-fiction novel about a man who one day discovers that the reality he lives in may be only a fragment of a far larger system. Kael’s ordinary life collapses after an encounter with an ancient mage, who opens a path to what lies hidden beyond the world he has always known. Gradually he learns that Nevarion is not simply a planet, but an intricate system in which technology, magic, power, and the secrets of those who can see further than the rest are all interwoven.

Trying to understand who he truly is and why he has become bound to this system, Kael confronts questions about free will, the nature of consciousness, and the limits of reality. The further he goes, the stronger the sense grows that something far greater stands behind it all — and that the line between man, god, and reality itself may be far thinner than it seems.

First chapter excerpt

Chapter 1. Groundhog Day

Nevarion’s cold cut to the skin through the thin layer of fabric. Seven degrees Celsius. Two suns hung above the horizon. Their cold light glanced off the gray sand that drifted in from the Valley of Shadows and hung over the megalopolis like smog, making the city pointlessly bright and gloomy at the same time.

Kael, sitting on the bed, slowly opened his eyes. Almost at once he felt the familiar fatigue—not physical, but deep. Ingrained in his bones, as if it were part of his body. A built-in defect he simply had to live with.

Kael was about thirty human years old. Nobody in this city knew their age for certain—the line blurred in the endless procession of identical days.

For most of his life Kael had worked just to make ends meet, and now he seemed to be living in anticipation of something that never quite arrived.

He was an ordinary office worker: he followed orders, filled out reports, ran errands for his superiors. His mind stayed clear and quick, but doubt had always lived in it.

Am I good enough?
Brave enough to step outside this life?

Kael was smiling, calm, kind—a sensitive soul, as people said of his type. He loved solitude and books and could watch the world from his window for hours. Others found him mysterious: he often stared into space, as though he were somewhere far away, inside his own thoughts, outside this reality.

Every morning was indistinguishable from the one before. He got up, got dressed, left his apartment, went to work, looked out at the gray megalopolis, and asked himself the same question again.

Is life really just working for food and a roof over your head?

Nevarion was a closed planet.

It was ruled by House Mekk—a syndicate in which everything revolved around technology, control, and power. Here there were no accidents and no empty spaces. Everything was built into the System.

People all looked the same: tired, distracted, eternally in a hurry. It seemed to Kael that they had never really woken up. Their bodies moved, their mouths talked, their hands worked—but inside, they seemed to be asleep.

Every day this quiet crowd flowed through the streets of the megalopolis, worked to survive, and told itself it had found a “way out.”

But there was no way out.

The world was ruled by bioengineering and technological progress.

Implants, prosthetics, neurochips—people improved themselves endlessly, bought new gadgets, modified their bodies, competed with one another. One showed off new x2-m3 vision, another enhanced limbs, another an expanded neural net. There were even modifications purely for pleasure.

Upgrades were sold as freedom, but in practice they became one more instrument of control. People took out loans to buy the next implant. Nearly all the chips were made by the syndicate. A closed loop with no way out.

Kael understood all this, and still he had become part of the System himself. He had several biochips. He justified it simply: survival. Or at least an attempt to feel alive.

One of the chips—a reaction-acceleration module—had been recommended by a coworker. Kael loved motorcycles; more than that, he had a genuine passion for them. So he’d had the black-market module installed: it made high speeds easier to control. At night, through the neon of Neo Lyar, Kael tore down empty highways on his Rawasaki Z1500 XR, knowing the Mekk guards could never catch him at three hundred kilometers an hour.

The implant had cost him six months’ pay, but Kael never once regretted it. Even though he understood it had made him a prisoner of the System. A prisoner of House Mekk.

That was how this city worked.

That was how this planet worked.

Born here, you became part of the System automatically.

The metro network was complex and many-layered: it ran beneath the megalopolis as well as above its levels. It connected the entire city of Neo Lyar—which was where Kael lived.

Neon-lit trains glided by almost without a sound. People got on and off like ghosts: identical, colorless, lost in thoughts of work, debts, deadlines.

On the surface, Neo Lyar rose in gray terraces of stone-and-metal skyscrapers. Flying cars crossed the space between the city’s levels. Half-light, cold, permafrost—all of it was part of everyday life. As natural a backdrop as breathing.

The soundtrack

THE ONLOOKER (Original Soundtrack) — music for the novel “The Onlooker”, the first book of the NEVARION world. Nine tracks, nine nodes of this archive. Each one plays in its own moment of the story: a cold dawn over Neo Liar, the meeting with the mage at Er-Nox Station, a chase through the night levels of the city. The soundtrack was recorded on analog synthesizers, the Sequential Prophet Rev2 and Sequential Pro 3. Live oscillators, filter drift and the warm noise of real circuits carry the listener from familiar reality into another universe, where the System sees everything. Listen together with the book.
